As a Finnish-American entrepreneur, she brings more than two decades of international experience at the intersection of technology, business strategy, and talent development. Tarja advises CEOs and executive teams worldwide, guiding leaders to scale AI within their organizations while keeping people at the core. A sought-after speaker, Tarja is dedicated to building resilient, future-ready teams that harness the full potential of AI without losing what makes them uniquely human.
Blue Ocean: Tell us about your professional journey. What sparked your passion for guiding AI-driven, people-centric transformation on a global scale?
Tarja Stephens: My career has been anything but linear. I started in finance, then moved into education, and later spent more than a decade in the marine industry, leading multimillion-dollar projects and implementing lean methodologies. That experience shaped my understanding of operational excellence, change management, and leadership.
The biggest shift came when, in my 40s, I decided to leave corporate life and step into entrepreneurship. About five years ago, I turned my focus fully to AI, with an emphasis on talent and workforce development and what people-centric AI transformation truly means.

Blue Ocean: What does a typical day look like in your role as Managing Partner and Founder at the AI Opportunity Agency?
Tarja Stephens: I love that question. The truth is—there really isn’t a “typical” day. No two days ever look alike. What I’m most grateful for right now is the global nature of my work: every day is about building collaborations and relationships. Much of my time is spent speaking with leaders across the public and private sectors, creating partnerships, and exploring how AI is going to impact society and our workforce, often through non-technical conversations.
A big part of my role also involves building the agency itself, sharing insights, and working closely with CEOs and executives. Another important aspect of my day is preparing for various events. As a keynote speaker, I often spend time getting ready for panels, conferences, and international gatherings. For example, next week I’ll be speaking at VivaTech in Paris, which I’m very excited about.
Alongside that, I’m currently finishing my book, Lead Within: 8 Life Lessons to Unlock Our Human Advantage in the Age of AI, which is scheduled for release in Early 2026. Writing this book has become a passion project, often taking up my evenings. It’s centered on reimagining what leadership looks like in the future, and how we can celebrate our inner qualities and capabilities as leaders.
And while my days are diverse and dynamic, my mornings always begin the same way with what I call the “three M’s.” First, a moment of gratitude, where I reflect on the excitement for the day ahead. Then, movement, some kind of physical activity to energize myself. Finally, meditation, which grounds me before everything begins. These three practices are my constants, setting the tone for a day filled with energy, purpose, and connection.
Blue Ocean: Your advisory work spans multiple continents and industries. What unique value do you bring to C-suite leaders navigating the complexity of AI integration in their organizations?
Tarja Stephens: I think this question is the one that many leaders are asking right now: How can we truly drive change within our organizations?
Earlier in my career, I witnessed firsthand how challenging change management can be. As one of the few women pioneering lean methodologies in the marine industry, I saw both the obstacles and the incredible impact that comes when change is done right—with the right leadership.
Today, my focus is on guiding executives to integrate AI not as an isolated IT project, but as a people-centered transformation. That means starting with themselves. Leaders need to ask: How can I be an AI-ready, AI-driven leader? I believe strongly in role modeling—leaders showing the vulnerability of learning this new technology themselves sets the tone for the entire organization.
From there, clarity within executive teams is essential. It’s about aligning around shared priorities instead of scattering focus across twenty different initiatives. Equally important is workforce development. Everyone in the organization should have foundational knowledge of AI, as well as access to the resources and support needed to learn and adapt.
Ultimately, it all comes down to communication and active listening. Leaders need to create an environment where employees feel engaged, supported, and ready to embrace this new era of technology.

Blue Ocean: What lessons or guiding principles would you share with your younger self when you first entered the world of tech, strategy, and leadership?
Tarja Stephens: If I could share guiding principles with my younger self, the first would be this: don’t be afraid to jump into the unknown. Take chances and be encouraged to try something new.
Adopting a curious, learner’s mindset has carried me throughout my career—from shifting across industries, to taking a break, to even becoming an entrepreneur in my 40s. To my younger self, I would say: empower yourself and have the courage to keep going, even when it feels challenging or frightening.
Often, the biggest opportunities come during moments of greatest discomfort. Building a bridge to the future means you may not know what’s on the other side—but you keep moving forward anyway. And along the way, you bring like-minded people with you, so that together you can create that bridge.
So my message would be simple: keep going, stay curious, and take the leap into the unknown, even when it feels scary.
Blue Ocean: You work at the forefront of AI and leadership. What emerging trends in people-centric AI transformation are you most excited about right now?
Tarja Stephens: I truly am very excited about the opportunities ahead. As we often say, the future holds more change in the next 10 years than in the past hundred years combined—that’s how quickly technology is accelerating. At times, it’s hard to fully grasp what that means, but the reality is that change is already here. The bus is moving, and we all have the opportunity to jump on and help steer it—whether as leaders or as everyday contributors.
What excites me most is that every single one of us can have an active role in shaping the future. It’s not limited to a few; it’s all of us. That’s why I advocate so strongly for diverse voices to be included—more women, more non-technical perspectives, more communities that are often left out of tech conversations.
On a broader scale, I’m inspired by the breakthroughs we’re beginning to see in fields such as healthcare, education, and across industries that will benefit from AI-driven innovation. At the same time, these opportunities come with challenges. And here is where leadership matters: AI will amplify whatever we bring into it. That means we must lead with compassion and integrity.
Even through small steps, each of us can help accelerate positive impact with this technology. What excited me is the chance to use AI not just as a tool, but as a force for inclusive, people-centered change.
Blue Ocean: You’re known for helping executive teams scale AI initiatives without losing sight of the human element. How do you help leaders balance innovation with empathy and inclusion?
Tarja Stephens: It really goes to the heart of what I write about in my book. I truly believe that our inner capabilities are the superpowers of leadership in the future.
For me, it begins with self-awareness. Leaders often look outward for validation and knowledge, but the truth is, we already hold so much wisdom and insight within ourselves. In today’s world, technology can handle many tasks for us. That means leadership is no longer just about what we do, but who we are.
This shift calls for leading with compassion, kindness, and wisdom. Intuition also plays a vital role. Even as technology provides us with vast amounts of data, there are moments when your gut tells you something doesn’t feel right. That feeling is powerful—it comes from our tacit knowledge, lived experiences, and emotions. And those are just as important in decision-making as the numbers on a dashboard.
My mission is to help leaders trust themselves, trust their inner wisdom, and embrace compassion as a guiding principle. By doing so, they can balance the promise of innovation with the human-centered values that will truly define leadership in the age of AI.
Blue Ocean: You operate in high-impact spaces with ambitious, mission-driven clients. What is something you are most grateful for—professionally or personally—that keeps you grounded?
Tarja Stephens: One year ago, I received the call no one is ever prepared for: “You have cancer.” That moment changed everything. The journey that followed taught me to live fully in the present and to treasure the people and experiences that give life meaning.
Today, I am grateful to say I am cancer-free. That experience deepened my commitment to advocate for early detection and emotional health, and it reinforced my belief that self-care is healthcare.
What keeps me grounded are the simple, human moments of joy and connection. In a world moving at incredible speed, those moments remind me of what truly matters—and they give me the strength to continue my work alongside leaders navigating transformation on a global scale.

Blue Ocean: Outside of your advisory and speaking roles, what brings you joy and balance in your everyday life?
Tarja Stephens: Well, let me start with Finland—my home country. Finland has been ranked as the happiest country in the world for eight years in a row, and I truly believe much of that joy comes from our deep connection to nature.
For me, being in nature is my greatest source of balance. I even raise monarch butterflies in my backyard—over 300 so far. Watching their transformation from caterpillar to butterfly is a constant reminder of life’s own cycles of change, growth, and renewal. That miracle of transformation inspires me every time.
Nature is also where I find solitude and reflection. Last summer, I did a two-week solo hike in the Arctic Circle, which became one of the most transformational experiences of my life. Out there, disconnected from the noise, I discovered nature as my greatest teacher of leadership, reminding me of resilience, patience, and adaptability.
So, what brings me joy is simple yet profound: immersing myself in nature, witnessing its quiet intelligence, and carrying those lessons back into how I live and lead.
Blue Ocean: What continues to inspire you when facing the challenges of helping organizations embrace a future shaped by both people and technology?
Tarja Stephens: That’s such a powerful question. We are indeed facing some of the biggest challenges society has ever encountered—but within those challenges lie extraordinary opportunities. I’m an optimist at heart. That doesn’t mean I think the road ahead will be smooth; it won’t. But the way we choose to approach these challenges makes all the difference.
I often say that AI is not just a skill set but a mindset. The real shift comes when leaders start asking, What is possible? What new potential can we imagine? Right now, many organizations are trying to apply AI on top of old, broken systems. But the real opportunity is in reimagining the blueprint entirely—building new structures that are human-led, AI-supported, and designed for the future.
When challenges arise, I turn to reflection. Instead of rushing into immediate solutions, I pause and ask the big questions: Is there another way? What lies outside the box? How boldly can we imagine? That space of reflection and imagination allows us to see not just the obstacles, but the transformational possibilities ahead.

Blue Ocean: Is there a quote or philosophy that has stayed with you—something that guides your decisions and approach to leadership, especially in today’s fast-evolving landscape?
Tarja Stephens: For me, the guiding truth is this: change is constant, and the energy we bring determines its impact. Leadership today is no longer just about what we do — it is about who we are as human beings.
What I mean by that is our emotions, our actions, and what we do have an incredible ripple effect that we might not even understand yet. So I call this a butterfly effect, which means that the kind act that you do today, no matter how small, will have a ripple effect we might not understand till years later.
That’s why I encourage everyone to lead with compassion and kindness, because it can have a big magnitude and impact in years to come. So I guess my mantra is this butterfly effect. If we keep that in mind, everybody will be doing it in their small ways every day, which could be an amazing way to shift this world to a better place.
Conclusion
Tarja Stephens’ journey reminds us that leadership is about people—not algorithms, systems, or the speed of innovation. Her philosophy clearly values compassion, curiosity, and bravery as a necessity in order to create a future where our technology can support us as people, not replace us altogether. Tarja reminds us that the true value of artificial intelligence is not in the technology itself, but in how we choose to use it to lead. By combining strategy with humanity and innovation with empathy, Tarja is assisting organizations around the world in creating an inclusive, people-centric environment. Her message is clear: the impact of our daily actions based on compassion and kindness can cascade over generations, communities, and industries. This is the essence of people-first transformation.
