Dwight A. Owens, M.D., D.F.A.P.A., M.C.I.M.E., is a board-certified psychiatrist, Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and Chief Psychiatrist of Peachstate Psychiatric Services, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia. With more than 25 years of experience, he integrates clinical psychiatry, forensic evaluation, and independent medical examinations in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr. Owens holds medical licenses in Georgia and New York and has been qualified as an expert witness in multiple jurisdictions, bringing deep expertise to complex legal and medical-legal cases. He is also a current clinical researcher with CenExel/Georgia.

A Morehouse College graduate, he earned his medical degree from the State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse, completed a family practice internship in Macon, and finished his psychiatry residency as Chief Resident before pursuing a forensic psychiatry fellowship at Emory University. He has served as Medical Director for county behavioral health services, consultation-liaison psychiatrist for Navicent/Atrium Health, and an independent contractor for QTC Medical Services.

Dr. Owens is an Associate Professor at Mercer University School of Medicine and an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Morehouse School of Medicine, and he has taught for The Osler Institute for over two decades. His practice focuses on trauma, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, ADHD, and relationship and faith-informed care, with a special commitment to underserved and culturally diverse communities. He is a member of Black Psychiatrists of America, the National Medical Association, the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association, and the Georgia Medical Association, and he will be inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers in April 2026.

About Dwight A. Owens

The Chief Psychiatrist for Peachstate Psychiatric Services, Inc. is Dwight A. Owens, M.D. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the prestigious Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his medical doctorate from the Health Science Center (HSC) at Syracuse in 1994. On completion of his Adult and General Psychiatry training, he attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and completed a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry, (Psychiatry and the Law).

As a practicing physician, Dr. Dwight A. Owens, has a respected voice in psychiatry that truly makes an impression. Dr.Owens has used this voice to discuss mental health information and confront issues of healthcare disparities, especially in communities of color. As a physician of color, Dr. Owens realizes how important it is to discuss openly, as well as confront issues related to untreated mental illness, mistrust of providers and the intersection of cultural values and how we see medical illnesses.

Dr.Owens was ordained as an Elder in the C.O.G.I.C. in 1999 by Bishop C. D. Owens.He is currently an active member of the Life Church of Atlanta. (Dr.Terrence Merritt) He is the Director of Mental Health for the International Sunday School Dept. (COGIC, Bishop Gatlin) The National Medical Association honored Dr. Owens with the Ernest Y. Williams Clinical Scholar of Distinction Award in 1999 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Owens is a financial member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He is an active member of 100 Black Men of America (South Metro Chapter) He is also an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at the Morehouse School of Medicine. He most recently has appeared on television shows such as Sisters Circle, Mind and Body and Soul with TD Jakes, TV. One News One, Frank and Wanda Morning show, and many other media outlets
